Diffusive coupling of two well-mixed compartments elucidates elementary principles of protein-based pattern formation

Fridtjof Brauns et al.

Summary: The study explores the importance of spatial organization of proteins in cells for biological functions, proposing a method based on diffusively coupled compartments to analyze protein-pattern formation. Phase-portrait analysis in phase-space provides insights into the physical mechanisms underlying pattern formation. The findings suggest that design principles of intracellular pattern formation are found in characteristic features of phase portraits.
