Spike mutation D614G alters SARS-CoV-2 fitness

Jessica A. Plante et al.

Summary: The D614G substitution in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein enhances viral replication and infectivity in human lung epithelial cells, primary airway tissues, and hamsters. This variant may increase transmission in the upper respiratory tract and doesn't seem to significantly reduce vaccine efficacy. Further research on therapeutic antibodies targeting the circulating G614 virus is recommended.

Associations of essential and toxic metals/metalloids in whole blood with both disease severity and mortality in patients with COVID-19

Hao-Long Zeng et al.

Summary: The levels of essential and toxic metal(loid)s in COVID-19 patients may be associated with disease severity and mortality. Higher levels of calcium, chromium, and copper were found in severe cases, while lower levels of magnesium, manganese, iron, zinc, arsenic, thallium, and lead were observed. Chromium and cadmium were associated with increased risk of death, while arsenic was associated with lower risk. Iron, age, and sex were independent factors related to disease severity, and chromium, cadmium, and cardiovascular disease comorbidity were independent factors related to mortality. Monitoring changes in whole blood metal(loid)s may be helpful in evaluating dynamic changes in COVID-19 patients.
