Mitigating photorefractive effect in thin-film lithium niobate microring resonators

Summary: This study demonstrates that the dielectric cladding on thin-film lithium niobate microring resonators has a significant impact on the photorefractive effect, and removing the dielectric cladding layer can effectively alleviate this effect. This research offers a reliable method for controlling the photorefractive effect on thin-film lithium niobate, which will further enhance the performance of integrated classical and quantum photonic devices based on thin-film lithium niobate.

Photorefraction-induced Bragg scattering in cryogenic lithium niobate ring resonators

Summary: In high-Q lithium niobate ring resonators at cryogenic temperatures, intracavity Bragg scattering induced by the photorefractive effect was observed to create a long-lived periodic space-charge field imprinting a refractive index modulation pattern. This phenomenon enhances back scattering of incoming light and leads to selective and reconfigurable mode splittings. Despite being undesired for many applications, this photorefractive-induced Bragg scattering effect could be utilized to enable optically programmable photonic components.

Cavity electro-optic circuit for microwave-to-optical conversion in the quantum ground state

Summary: A research team has developed an integrated superconducting cavity electrooptic circuit based on single crystalline thin-film aluminum nitride with ultra-low microwave and optical losses. They demonstrated efficient bi-directional MO conversion at milli-Kelvin temperatures despite the optical excitation-induced noise. Their study further revealed different mechanisms of light-induced noise generation and provided crucial guidelines for optimizing electro-optic circuits in future hybrid microwave-optical quantum links.
