Morphological diversity of acoustic and electric communication systems of mochokid catfish

Loic Kever et al.

Summary: Mochokid catfish provide a unique opportunity to study a communication system transitioning, with some species producing sounds and others electric discharges. Despite differences in sound and electric signal production, the peripheral and central components of the ESS are conserved among mochokids. The ability of some species to produce both signals may depend on an intermediate protractor muscle morphology and two separate populations of protractor motoneurons.

Gap junction-mediated glycinergic inhibition ensures precise temporal patterning in vocal behavior

Summary: The study investigates how toadfish motoneurons maintain synchronous activation and suggests that gap junction-mediated, glycinergic inhibition is crucial for achieving temporal precision in neuronal firing, supporting rapid modulation of acoustic waveforms in the millisecond range.
