Amyloid-beta is a significant factor in Alzheimer's disease, affecting the progression and prognosis. Its deposition damages the blood-brain barrier, while dysfunction of the barrier exacerbates Aβ accumulation. This review highlights the interactions and mechanisms between Aβ deposition and BBB damage in AD.
Amyloid-beta (A beta) is the predominant pathologic protein in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The production and deposition of A beta are important factors affecting AD progression and prognosis. The deposition of neurotoxic A beta contributes to damage of the blood-brain barrier. However, the BBB is also crucial in maintaining the normal metabolism of A beta, and dysfunction of the BBB aggravates A beta deposition. This review characterizes A beta deposition and BBB damage in AD, summarizes their interactions, and details their respective mechanisms.
