Structure of SARS-CoV-2 ORF8, a rapidly evolving immune evasion protein

Thomas G. Flower et al.

Summary: The crystal structure of SARS-CoV-2 ORF8 was determined at 2.04-angstrom resolution by X-ray crystallography, revealing unique dimerization interfaces that may allow the protein to form large-scale assemblies, potentially mediating immune suppression and evasion activities.

SARS-CoV-2 ORF9b inhibits RIG-I-MAVS antiviral signaling by interrupting K63-linked ubiquitination of NEMO

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 activates and represses the innate immune response, leading to dysregulation and delayed interferon expression, which contribute to the development of COVID-19. The study reveals that ORF9b inhibits the type I interferon response during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Compositional diversity and evolutionary pattern of coronavirus accessory proteins

Jingzhe Shang et al.

Summary: Accessory proteins play crucial roles in coronavirus-host interactions. A standardized genome annotation tool, CoroAnnoter, was developed to study the composition, evolutionary patterns, and host interactions of accessory proteins in coronaviruses. Variations in the number of accessory proteins were observed among different coronaviruses, with SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV having the most. Evolutionary analysis revealed conservation and diversity in the distribution of accessory proteins within and between different genera of coronaviruses. Additionally, comparison of virus-host interaction networks of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV accessory proteins showed shared antiviral signaling pathways and biological processes.
