In vitro characterisation of SARS-CoV-2 and susceptibility of domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo)

Glenn A. Marsh et al.

Summary: Researchers made efforts early in the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak to propagate and characterize an Australian isolate of the virus in vitro and in an ex vivo model of human airway epithelium, as well as to demonstrate the susceptibility of domestic ferrets to SARS-CoV-2 infection following intranasal challenge.

Intranasal fusion inhibitory lipopeptide prevents direct-contact SARS-CoV-2 transmission in ferrets

Rory D. de Vries et al.

Summary: The lipopeptide fusion inhibitors designed effectively blocked the critical first step of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Daily intranasal administration to ferrets prevented transmission completely, showcasing potential as safe and effective prophylaxis for reducing SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

Human-to-Cat SARS-CoV-2 Transmission: Case Report and Full-Genome Sequencing from an Infected Pet and Its Owner in Northern Italy

Gabriele Pagani et al.

Summary: Research suggests that humans infected with SARS-CoV-2 can transmit the virus to their pets, indicating the need to extend quarantine measures to pets living in infected households. A case study described in this report analyzed the full genome of the virus in both a cat and its owner, providing evidence of domestic transmission.

Animal Coronaviruses and SARS-COV-2 in Animals, What Do We Actually Know?

Paolo Bonilauri et al.

Summary: Coronaviruses are a well-known group of viruses in veterinary medicine, with four known genera infecting wild, farmed, and pet animals. In humans, seven respiratory coronaviruses have been identified, causing a range of diseases from the common cold to severe acute respiratory syndromes. This review discusses animal coronaviruses and the current understanding of SARS-CoV-2 infection in farm and domestic animals.

Investigation of SARS-CoV-2 infection in dogs and cats of humans diagnosed with COVID-19 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Guilherme Amaral Calvet et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that dogs and cats living with COVID-19 patients in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, could be infected or seropositive for SARS-CoV-2, with some developing mild and reversible signs of the disease. Logistic regression analysis showed that neutering and sharing a bed with the ill owner were associated with pet infection. People with COVID-19 should avoid close contact with their pets during their illness to prevent potential transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Antibody Response in a Symptomatic Cat from Italy with Intestinal B-Cell Lymphoma

Julia Klaus et al.

Summary: A study in Northern Italy reported a case of a cat with an underlying intestinal B-cell lymphoma that developed a SARS-CoV-2 infection, detectable RNA before clinical signs appeared. The research suggests that cats are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 under natural conditions and comorbidities may influence the development of clinical disease.
