Weedy rice (Oryza spp.) diversity in southern Brazil

Leonard Bonilla Piveta et al.

Summary: This study characterized the morphological diversity of weedy rice in southern Brazil, analyzing 249 accessions from Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Santa Catarina (SC) states. All accessions were of indica lineage and separated into 14 distinct groups based on phenotypic traits, with high variability in flowering time, indicating potential for gene flow and diverse responses to weed management in herbicide-resistant rice planting.

Status of weedy rice (Oryza spp.) infestation and management practices in southern Brazil

Luis Antonio de Avila et al.

Summary: The survey found that in southern Brazil, most farms have adopted the CL system, with farms in RS state mostly larger than 150 ha and using minimal or conventional tillage, permanent flooding, clomazone PRE tank-mixed with glyphosate at the rice spiking stage, rotational cropping with soybean or pasture. In SC state, where rice farms are smaller, averaging from 20 to 30 ha, farmers predominantly plant pre-germinated rice, do not rotate rice with other crops, and practice roguing.

Understanding the Opportunities to Mitigate Carryover of Imidazolinone Herbicides in Lowland Rice

Vinicios Rafael Gehrke et al.

Summary: This study found that imidazolinones dissipate primarily through biodegradation in soil. The rate of herbicide biodegradation depends on environmental conditions such as temperature and bioavailability of the herbicide in the soil. Environmental conditions that favor biological activity, especially high temperatures, can reduce the herbicide half-life in the soil.
