Occurrence and quantification of culturable and viable but non-culturable (VBNC) pathogens in biofilm on different pipes from a metropolitan drinking water distribution system

Yulong Fu et al.

Summary: This study quantified the culturability of waterborne pathogens in biofilms from a metropolitan drinking water distribution system, finding that pipe material significantly influences the culturability of pathogens and microbial communities. Stainless steel clad pipe was identified as a better choice for pathogen control compared to other metal pipes. These findings provide valuable insights into managing water quality in DWDS.

Optimizing disinfectant residual dosage in engineered water systems to minimize the overall health risks of opportunistic pathogens and disinfection by-products

Chiqian Zhang et al.

Summary: Municipal water utilities should consider health risks of both opportunistic pathogens (OPs) and disinfection by-products (DBPs) while selecting disinfectant residual dosages in engineered water systems. Maintaining disinfectant residuals at an optimal level is effective in minimizing overall health risks of OPs and DBPs in drinking water.

Source-to-Tap Assessment of Microbiological Water Quality in Small Rural Drinking Water Systems in Puerto Rico Six Months After Hurricane Maria

Ishi Keenum et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the functionality of rural water systems in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and surveyed various pathogens. Pathogenic genes were detected in surface water sources, Salmonella was found in multiple sources and distribution systems, and Legionella and Mycobacteria gene levels were similar to nonoutbreak conditions in the U.S. mainland.

A comprehensive evaluation of monochloramine disinfection on water quality, Legionella and other important microorganisms in a hospital

Darren A. Lytle et al.

Summary: Opportunistic pathogens such as Legionella pose a significant public health concern in hospitals. Monitoring of microbiological and water chemistry parameters in hot water at an Ohio hospital before and after the installation of a monochloramine disinfection system over 16 months showed significant reductions in Legionella and nontuberculous Mycobacteria. Overall, the addition of monochloramine led to a decrease in heterotrophic bacteria and a significant decrease in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Vermamoeba vermiformis.

Are pathogenic Legionella non- pneumophila a common bacteria in Water Distribution Networks?

Mireya Beatriz Salinas et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the presence of Legionella in artificial aquatic systems of state-owned facilities in Spain, finding Legionella in water samples collected from different locations, especially in cooling towers, hot and cold water systems, and decorative fountains. The study highlights the potential public health threat posed by the presence of Legionella pneumophila and non-pneumophila species in these systems.

Environmental Management of Legionella in Domestic Water Systems: Consolidated and Innovative Approaches for Disinfection Methods and Risk Assessment

Emanuele Luigi Sciuto et al.

Summary: Legionella can exist as planktonic bacteria in water or grow within biofilms on pipes, it has various survival states and adaptabilities. Environmental factors regulating Legionella growth and water treatment distribution conditions are crucial for its survival, implementing water management plans is the main prevention measure.

The Increasing Importance of Vermamoeba vermiformis

Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui et al.

Summary: Vermamoeba vermiformis are prevalent free-living amoebae found in hospital water networks, associated with pathogenic bacteria and capable of causing keratitis. Despite ongoing discussions about their medical importance, theranostics approach could help eradicate diseases caused by such amoebae. It is imperative to study these rarely investigated amoebae and understand their significance in human health, especially in the context of global warming.

Legionella: A Promising Supplementary Indicator of Microbial Drinking Water Quality in Municipal Engineered Water Systems

Chiqian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study argues that Legionella, as a dominant OP-containing genus in EWSs, is a promising supplementary indicator for the prevalence of OPs due to its frequent occurrence, high concentration, and correlation with more microbial and physicochemical water quality parameters than other common OPs. Legionella and other OPs share key features like high disinfectant resistance, biofilm formation, and significant spatiotemporal variations, making Legionella a proper indicator for microbial drinking water quality in EWSs.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence of FLA and ARB species in borehole water before and after a ceramic point-of-use intervention in rural households. It found that the ceramic pot filter removed many microorganisms from the water, but design flaws may have led to some FLA and ARB still being detected.

Biofilm Community Structures and Opportunistic Pathogen Gene Markers in Drinking Water Mains and the Role of Pipe Materials

Summary: This study investigated the biofilm community in water mains and found high detection frequencies of Legionella pneumophila, Acanthamoeba, and Vermamoeba vermiformis. It also showed that pipe materials significantly affected colonization by opportunistic pathogens, with nitrifying bacteria dominant in ductile iron pipes and denitrifying bacteria more abundant in cast iron pipes. This research provides ecological insights into a poorly understood ecosystem.
