Ammonia oxidation at pH 2.5 by a new gammaproteobacterial ammonia-oxidizing bacterium

Nunzia Picone et al.

Summary: The study discovered a novel gammaproteobacterial ammonia-oxidizing bacterium that can grow and oxidize ammonia at extremely acidic conditions (pH 2.5), showing high ammonia affinity and tolerance to toxic nitric oxide. This bacterium has a chemolithoautotrophic lifestyle and was characterized through physiological, genomic, and transcriptomic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis revealed it belongs to a novel bacterial genus, proposed to be named Candidatus Nitrosacidococcus tergens sp. RJ19.

Summary: The use of multiple open chambers in urea-amended field plots can reduce variability in the measurement of NH3 volatilization, while concentrating sampling efforts in the first two weeks after urea application can reduce uncertainty in the measurements.
