Spatio-temporal soil moisture retrieval at the catchment scale using a dense network of cosmic-ray neutron sensors

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of CRNS technique in obtaining spatio-temporal patterns of soil moisture beyond integrated volume from isolated footprints, and benchmarks different interpolation techniques for obtaining representations of soil moisture. The results show that constrained interpolation approach is superior for representing horizontal soil moisture gradients at the hectometer scale, providing coherent, consistent, and continuous soil moisture patterns for validating hydrological models or remote sensing products.
