In this study, the diffusion behavior of Zn in the primary Mg phase (α(Mg)) was investigated using GD-OES characterization, with self-consistent diffusion coefficients obtained at different temperatures. The method applied in this study is suitable for systems where the second element has limited solubility in the primary element phase.
Diffusion behaviour of Zn in primary Mg phase (alpha (Mg)) was investigated using Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GD-OES) characterization on semi-infinite diffusion-couples employing quantitive chemical analysis method under the eroding mode. The obtained composition profiles along the diffusion area were continuous without obvious steps in the phase boundary. Self-consistent diffusion coefficients were obtained as 6.3 x 10-17, 1.2 x 10-16, and 2.5 x 10-16 at 498, 548 and 573 K respectively, which follow the Arrhenius relationship. The currently applied method is suitable for studying systems in which the second element shows only limited solubility in the primary element phase.
