The Status under EU Law of Organisms Developed through Novel Genomic Techniques

Piet Van der Meer et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union on whether organisms obtained through mutagenesis and directed mutagenesis techniques constitute GMOs. It provides historical and technical background and concludes that the resulting organisms must comply with the GMO definition and have genetic alterations not occurring naturally through mating or recombination.

EU Regulation of New Plant Breeding Technologies and Their Possible Economic Implications for the EU and BeyondJEL codes

Kai Purnhagen et al.

Summary: New plant breeding technologies, such as CRISPR gene editing, are driving the development of new crops, but are also facing criticism and discussion. The interpretation by the Court of Justice of the European Union has subjected most NPBTs to regulations governing genetically modified organisms in the EU, raising implications for countries outside the EU.
