Fusobacterium nucleatum confers chemoresistance by modulating autophagy in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: F. nucleatum infection was found to reduce chemotherapeutic response in ESCC patients, by modulating autophagy to induce resistance against 5-FU, CDDP, and Docetaxel. Targeting F. nucleatum during chemotherapy may lead to improved therapeutic outcomes for ESCC patients.

Porphyromonas gingivalis promotes tumor progression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Miao-Fen Chen et al.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that the microbiome can influence tumor growth and the tumor microenvironment in gastrointestinal cancers. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a periodontal pathogen, is associated with the development and progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Targeting P. gingivalis or blocking IL-6 signaling may be a potential strategy to prevent and treat EsoSCC associated with this oral bacterium.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Eradication of Helicobacter pylori and Gastric Cancer: A Controversial Relationship

Mariagrazia Piscione et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of death in developed countries, mainly caused by Helicobacter pylori which is considered a type I carcinogen. The development of gastric cancer involves a progression from gastritis to intestinal metaplasia and eventual adenocarcinoma, with steps including chronic non-atrophic gastritis triggered by H. pylori infection.

Nanopore sequencing and its application to the study of microbial communities

Laura Ciuffreda et al.

Summary: The introduction of nanopore sequencing technology has significantly improved our ability to study complex microbial samples, allowing real-time sequencing of long reads with low cost and portability. This technology plays a crucial role in resolving complex genomic structures, accessing metagenome assembled genomes, and shows great potential in environmental microbial analysis.

Predicting endoscopic activity recovery in England after COVID-19: a national analysis

Kai Man Alexander Ho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on endoscopy services in England, revealing a significant backlog of procedures that may take a considerable amount of time to clear even with increased capacity. Urgent action is required to address the backlog and prevent delays in patient management.

The gut microbiome: what every gastroenterologist needs to know

Benjamin H. Mullish et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in interest in the gut microbiome, especially in its potential contribution to gastrointestinal and liver diseases. This field holds the potential for novel diagnostics and therapeutics, but there are still many uncertainties and areas of debate due to its nascent nature.
