Can improving animal health and biosecurity knowledge of para-veterinarians in Cambodia assist in addressing challenges in smallholder livestock farming?

Isabel B. J. MacPhillamy et al.

Summary: Para-veterinarians play a crucial role in providing front-line veterinary care and advice to smallholder farmers in countries with under-resourced national veterinary services. In Cambodia, Village Animal Health Workers (VAHWs) showed a high level of animal health and biosecurity knowledge, which was positively associated with positive biosecurity and disease reporting behaviors. Regular monitoring and evaluation of training programs for VAHWs can further strengthen the livestock sector in Cambodia.

A cost-benefit analysis of foot and mouth disease control program for smallholder cattle farmers in Cambodia

Summary: The Cambodian government is working to mobilize funding from various sectors for a coordinated FMD vaccination program. The study found that farmers would benefit from participating in the program if there are average annual outbreaks or at least two major outbreaks in the next 5 years. Factors such as vaccination success, treatment success, and coverage levels influence the overall benefits of the program.

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of smallholder farmers on foot and mouth disease control in two Cambodian provinces

Socheat Sieng et al.

Summary: The survey in Cambodia revealed inadequate knowledge and low vaccination coverage of FMD among farmers, leading to regular outbreaks. Farmers tended to focus on treatment rather than isolating the first infected cattle, and preferred to report outbreaks to village animal health workers, friends, neighbors, and relatives rather than government officials.
