MALDI-MS analysis of disaccharide isomers using graphene oxide as MALDI matrix

Dabin Lee et al.

Summary: Disaccharides are sugars composed of two monosaccharides linked by a glycosidic linkage, with specific properties determined by the type of linkage and the identity of the monosaccharides. Using MALDI-MS with a graphene oxide matrix, seven disaccharide isomers were analyzed and their unique cleavage patterns were identified. The study demonstrated a strong linear correlation between the relative peak intensity of a sucrose fragment peak and the amount of sucrose in a mixture, which was successfully applied to quantify maltose and sucrose in different honey samples.

Structural Characterization of Isomeric Oligogalacturonan Mixtures Using Ultrahigh-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Charge Transfer Dissociation Mass Spectrometry

Praneeth M. Mendis et al.

Summary: This study successfully coupled charge transfer dissociation-mass spectrometry (CTD-MS) with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) to differentiate isomers of oligogalacturonans derived from citrus pectins. Compared to UHPLC with collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry (UHPLC-CID-MS), UHPLC-CTD-MS yielded fewer ambiguous ions and more structurally informative results.

Analysis of Synthetic Monodisperse Polysaccharides by Wide Mass Range Ultrahigh-Resolution MALDI Mass Spectrometry

Simone Nicolardi et al.

Summary: The study of synthetic oligo- and polysaccharides, which require pure compounds with defined structures obtained from chemical or enzymatic syntheses, can be effectively analyzed using wide mass range ultrahigh-resolution MALDI-FT-ICR mass spectrometry. Detection of fragment ions generated from glycosidic bond cleavage provides information on monosaccharide content and linkage type, enabling accurate analysis of carbohydrate compositions and structures.

MALDI-TOF/TOF tandem mass spectrometry imaging reveals non-uniform distribution of disaccharide isomers in plant tissues

Lingpeng Zhan et al.

Summary: Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a powerful technique for studying biomolecular locations in tissues, but often struggles to differentiate isomeric compounds. Coupling tandem mass spectrometry with MSI can help differentiate isomers effectively. This study utilized MALDI-TOF/TOF tandem mass spectrometry imaging to successfully differentiate isomeric disaccharides in plant tissues, highlighting the importance of considering isobaric compounds in research.

Discrimination of isomeric monosaccharide derivatives using collision-induced fingerprinting coupled to ion mobility mass spectrometry

Xinzhou Wu et al.

Summary: A new energy-resolved collision-induced fingerprint (CIF) method is demonstrated for fully discriminating isomeric monosaccharide derivatives without complex instrument modifications. By increasing collisional energy, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ion mobility (IM) peaks can be significantly narrowed, allowing for rapid discrimination of monosaccharide derivate isomers. The unique feature values and root-mean square deviation (RMSD) in CIF spectra contribute to the full discrimination of isomers, highlighting the potential of this strategy in expanding the horizons of ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) platform.
