Ten compounds, including three new ones, were isolated from the endophytic fungus Eutypella scoparia SCBG-8, with eutyscoparol J possessing a rare fused ring system. These compounds show promising antimicrobial activity and low cytotoxicity, indicating their potential as leads for drug development.
Ten compounds, including three new ones, eutyscoparols H-J (1, 2 and 5), together with seven related known ones (3, 4 and 6-10), were isolated from the endophytic fungus Eutypella scoparia SCBG-8. Their chemical structures as well as absolute configurations were established by interpretation of the NMR spectroscopic data and X-ray diffraction. Among them, eutyscoparol J possesses a rarely occurring complex 6/6/6/6/6/6/6 fused ring system. Moreover, the cytotoxic and antibacterial assays suggested that compounds 1-4 could serve as promising leads for further antimicrobial drug development, with potent antibacterial activity (MIC values 1.25-6.25 lg/mL towards MRSA) and weak cytotoxicity. 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
