A Wearable Electrochemical Sensing System for Non-Invasive Monitoring of Lithium Drug in Bipolar Disorder

Francesca Criscuolo et al.

Summary: The paper presents the development of a complete non-invasive system for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) of lithium in sweat for patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD). The system includes a wearable electrochemical sensing platform with a stable Reference Electrode (RE) and a potentiometric Ion-Selective Electrode (ISE). Through chemical chlorination and use of a PVC membrane doped with an Ionic Liquid (IL), the system achieved accurate detection of lithium concentrations in sweat, with tested results showing good sensing capability within the clinical interest range.
