Administrative Data Are Unreliable for Ranking Hospital Performance Based on Serious Complications After Spine Fusion

Jacob K. Greenberg et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of administrative billing data was conducted to evaluate hospital performance in spine fusion surgery. The study found that the reliability of a serious complication metric was poor for cervical fusion and only modestly reliable for thoracolumbar fusion. The study concluded that these measures may not be appropriate for high-stakes applications like public reporting or pay-for-performance when using administrative datasets.
