Thermal performance and economic analysis of an indirect solar dryer of wood integrated with packed-bed thermal energy storage system: A case study of solar thermal applications

Bilal Lamrani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal performance and economic feasibility of an indirect solar wood dryer integrated with a thermal energy storage system. A new numerical model was developed and simulations showed that integrating the storage system can significantly reduce drying time and payback period. Results indicated that the system is most suitable for Zone 6 with a payback period of 1.85 years.

Study on the effect of conical and parabolic solar concentrator designs on hybrid solar dryers for apricots under variable conditions: A numerical simulation approach

Merlin Simo-Tagne et al.

Summary: The paper presents a numerical model and simulation of the heat and mass transfer in a solar dryer with different concentrator shapes for drying apricots, considering their thermo-physical properties and the climate conditions in Nancy France. The results show that non-hybrid drying with a non-coaxial conical concentrator has lower energy consumption and better performance compared to other methods. The study also reveals that continuous drying with 1 MW shows better drying kinetics in different seasons, while intermittent drying with 2 MW is more effective in the autumn period.

Thermal performance and environmental assessment of a hybrid solar-electrical wood dryer integrated with Photovoltaic/Thermal air collector and heat recovery system

Bilal Lamrani et al.

Summary: This study investigates a novel hybrid dryer system for wood drying industry, which includes a PVT solar air collector, an insulated drying chamber, an air-to-air heat recovery system and fans. Results show that the proposed system significantly reduces carbon emissions and improves energy efficiency in wood drying process, with up to 86.5% energy consumption reduction during summer and 73.5% reduction during winter.

Numerical Study of the Drying of Cassava Roots Chips Using an Indirect Solar Dryer in Natural Convection

Merlin Simo-Tagne et al.

Summary: An indirect solar dryer model was established and experimentally validated for drying cassava root chips, showing varying heat and mass transfer coefficients during the drying process. The study found that the core of the product takes longer to dry, prolonging the overall drying time.
