Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) allow sensitive differentiation of biological soil quality

Summary: Understanding the change in function of the biological community under different soil conditions is crucial for effective soil quality assessment and remediation efforts. This study compared the use of volatilomics to phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiling for evaluating biological soil quality, with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) showing higher sensitivity in distinguishing soil quality treatments. Specifically, anaerobic soils amended with residues displayed the greatest separation from other treatments, with certain VOCs playing a significant role in this differentiation.
