Sulfamethoxazole degradation by the CuOx/persulfate system

Kosmas Lalas et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of immobilized CuOx catalyst for activating sodium persulfate (SPS) and degrading the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The morphology and physicochemical characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed, and the degradation of SMX was found to be affected by the water matrices and the concentration of SPS. Under various conditions, the CuOx/SPS system showed stable performance in removing SMX, with the presence of bicarbonate hindering the removal process.

ZIF-8 derived Fe-N coordination moieties anchored carbon nanocubes for efficient peroxymonosulfate activation via non-radical pathways: Role of FeNx sites

Jingjing He et al.

Summary: This work developed novel carbon nanocubes (xFe-N-C) with abundant FeNx sites, showing excellent activity for phenol degradation by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The catalytic system exhibited good recycling performance, wide pH adaptation, and high resistance to environmental interference, with singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) dominating the phenol degradation process. The introduction of FeNx sites regulated the electronic structure of the catalysts, enhancing the catalytic activity through the generation of highly reactive O-1(2) for rapid phenol oxidation.

CuO/g-C3N4 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts as efficient peroxymonosulfate activators under visible light for oxytetracycline degradation: Characterization, efficiency and mechanism

Min Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, a CuO/g-C3N4 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalyst was designed to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light irradiation. The catalyst showed almost 100% degradation efficiency towards OTC in 10 minutes, and also effectively degraded other antibiotics. Through investigation of experimental conditions, stability evaluation, and analysis of reactive oxygen species, the mechanism and pathway of OTC degradation were explored in depth. This work provides valuable insights for developing efficient g-C3N4-based photocatalytic technology for antibiotic removal from the environment.

Removal and transformation of sulfamethoxazole in acclimated biofilters with various operation modes - Implications for full-scale application

Adam Sochacki et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in lab-scale biofilters with various operation variables. It was found that insufficient aeration led to a slower rate of SMX degradation, and removal rate was >99%. LC-MS/MS analysis showed various biotransformation reactions for SMX, with decreased relative abundance of transformation products in the presence of MnOx or acetate. Microtox assay results indicated that only effluents from unaerated columns filled with MnOx were classified as non-toxic.

Nitrogen doping sludge-derived biochar to activate peroxymonosulfate for degradation of sulfamethoxazole: Modulation of degradation mechanism by calcination temperature

Shizong Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the surface property of biochar can be modified through nitrogen doping and calcination temperature, affecting the degradation mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Increasing calcination temperature led to a decrease in the contribution of free radicals to SMX degradation, while the contribution of surface-bound reactive species increased gradually. The study also showed that nitrogen-doped sludge-derived biochar (NSDB) had higher catalytic activity compared to sludge-derived biochar (SDB), indicating the potential of nitrogen doping to enhance the catalytic activity of biochar.
