Two dimensional COFs as ultra-thin interlayer to build TFN hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane for desalination and heavy metal wastewater treatment

Yongxiang Jiang et al.

Summary: An ultra-thin interlayer of two-dimensional COFs was formed on a polysulfone hollow fiber substrate surface to manipulate the interfacial polymerization process for constructing a thin film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane with greatly improved separation performance. The membrane showed high rejection rates for various salts and enhanced water permeance under optimal conditions. Additionally, it exhibited good long-term stability and fouling resistance, indicating its potential for applications in desalination and heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Summary: The depletion of mineable Cu reserves due to technological limitations has led the hydrometallurgical copper industry to explore alternative sources. Researchers are focusing on recovering valuable metals from acidic waste streams, with membrane technologies being favored for this purpose. The Duracid membrane, known for its extreme acid resistance, shows promise in recovering metals from synthetic acidic waste streams in the industry.

Ceramic-Polymer Composite Membranes for Water and Wastewater Treatment: Bridging the Big Gap between Ceramics and Polymers

Masashi Kotobuki et al.

Summary: Clean water supply is crucial for sustainable human society, and membrane filtration using ceramics and polymers is the preferred choice due to energy efficiency and effectiveness. While ceramic membranes offer superior performance, the high manufacturing cost has led to the development of ceramic-polymer composite membranes to combine the advantages of both materials for improved membrane performance at a lower cost.

Preparation, characterization and acid/alkali stabilities of aromatic polyesteramide-based composite membranes for water desalination

Pengfei Chen et al.

Summary: A novel aromatic polyesteramide membrane with high free volume was prepared by adding a rigid cardo-contorted biphenol monomer, showing significant increase in water flux and slight decrease in salt rejection compared to polyamide membrane. Acid and alkali stabilities of the polyesteramide membranes were studied, and it was found that treating the membranes with acid/EA resulted in increased water flux and salt rejection within 24 hours due to increased hydrophilicity and partial dissolution of small polymer fragments on the membrane surface.

Summary: Both GONs and o-SWNTs increase hydrophilicity and water permeability of membranes by causing the formation of ridges and clustered bumps on the surface. However, the acid resistance of GONs-embedded membranes increases with concentration, while o-SWNTs do not show a difference.

A nanofiltration membrane fabricated on a surfactant activated substrate with improved separation performance and acid resistance

Lu Bai et al.

Summary: An acid-resistant nanofiltration membrane with high permeability and rejection was prepared through interfacial polymerization assisted by surfactants. The addition of surfactants, particularly SDS, significantly affected the membrane performance. The presence of SDS on the membrane surface improved the retention of PEI during membrane preparation, influencing the morphology and cross-linking degree of the membrane, ultimately affecting its performance and acid resistance.

Poly(aryl cyanurate)-Based Thin-Film Composite Nanofiltration Membranes

Maria G. Elshof et al.

Summary: The successful synthesis of poly(aryl cyanurate) nanofiltration membranes via interfacial polymerization has been demonstrated. The membranes exhibit typical nanofiltration behavior with good molecular weight cutoff and permeance values. The membranes show negative surface charge and pH stability issues under extreme acidic and alkaline conditions due to hydrolysis of the aryl cyanurate bond.
