Hepatocellular carcinoma

Josep M. Llovet et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), poses a significant global health challenge with rising incidence projected to exceed 1 million cases by 2025. Infection by hepatitis B and C viruses remains a major risk factor for HCC, while non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is emerging as a more common risk factor in Western countries. Advances in systemic therapies for HCC, including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, are expected to revolutionize the management of this disease.

The Significance of Nonlinear Screening and the pH Interference Mechanism in Field-Effect Transistor Molecular Sensors

Sybren Santermans et al.

Summary: The detrimental impact of electrolyte screening on liquid-gated field-effect transistor (FET) molecular sensors is well known and described by the linearized Debye-Huckel model. However, the presence of charged and pH-sensitive FET sensing surfaces can limit sensitivity beyond the Debye-Huckel screening. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate the significant role of nonlinear screening and pH interference effects on charge-based biomolecular sensing with silicon FET sensors.

Structural and Sensing Characteristics of NiOx Sensing Films for Extended-Gate Field-Effect Transistor pH Sensors

Tung-Ming Pan et al.

Summary: The study showed that NiOx sensing film after PDA at 500 degrees Celsius exhibited higher pH sensitivity, smaller hysteresis width, and lower drift coefficient compared to different PDA temperatures. This improvement may be attributed to the column-like polycrystalline structure, high Ni2+ content, and thinner silicide layer at the NiOx/Si interface, which promoted proton-exchange process and increased surface bind-sites. Additionally, the PDA temperature minimized oxygen vacancies and passivated trap sites, reducing the formation of a hydrated layer on the NiOx film surface.

Detection of Antibodies against Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) by a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) Biosensor: A New Diagnosis Tool Based on the Major HAV Capsid Protein VP1 (SPR-HAVP1)

Gabriel Menezes Costa dos Santos et al.

Summary: Hepatitis A is an acute human infectious disease caused by a positive single-stranded RNA virus, primarily spread through the fecal-oral route. Recent large outbreaks in low and moderate endemic areas have highlighted the importance of rapid diagnostic tests, leading to the proposal of a new tool based on surface plasmonic resonance with major capsid protein VP1. This new tool, SPR-HAVP1 assay, showed good performance in detecting IgM antibodies for HAV in human serum samples.
