Sensitive, small, broadband and scalable optomechanical ultrasound sensor in silicon photonics

Summary: A new ultrasound sensor utilizing silicon photonic technology has been developed, featuring extreme sensitivity and miniaturized size, with noise performance two orders of magnitude better than traditional piezoelectric elements of the same size. The sensor matrix with on-chip photonic multiplexing offers the potential for miniaturized catheters.

Broadband thermomechanically limited sensing with an optomechanical accelerometer

Summary: The optomechanical accelerometer based on a Fabry-Perot microcavity in a silicon chip achieves the highest reported acceleration resolution to date and can self-calibrate, making it precise and field deployable. It enables accurate conversion from sensor displacement to acceleration over a wide frequency range and can measure acceleration directly in terms of the laser wavelength, serving as intrinsic standards in various measurements.

The Ingenuity Helicopter on the Perseverance Rover

Summary: The Ingenuity helicopter will be deployed from the Perseverance Rover for a 30-sol experimental campaign shortly after the rover lands and is commissioned. This helicopter will demonstrate, for the first time, autonomous controlled flight of an aircraft in the Mars environment, thus opening up an aerial dimension to Mars exploration. Information returned from a planned set of five flights will inform the development of new Mars helicopter designs for future missions.
