Learning from the past: development of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines

Shan Su et al.

Summary: In the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, it is crucial to prioritize safety and efficacy evaluations, drawing lessons from past vaccine development efforts. Su, Du, and Jiang summarize the lessons from previous vaccine development for other viruses, highlighting how mechanisms of vaccine-associated disease enhancement can inform the development of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine.

A single-dose live-attenuated YF17D-vectored SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate

Lorena Sanchez-Felipe et al.

Summary: The candidate vaccine YF-S0, utilizing the YF17D vaccine as a vector to express noncleavable prefusion form of the SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen, showed excellent safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy in animal models. It induced high levels of neutralizing antibodies, provided protective immunity against SARS-CoV-2, and prevented infection in hamsters and macaques. A single dose was able to confer protection from lung disease in most vaccinated hamsters within 10 days, highlighting the potential of YF-S0 as a potent SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate.

Replication, pathogenicity, and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in minks

Lei Shuai et al.

Summary: Minks can efficiently replicate and transmit SARS-CoV-2, causing similar pulmonary lesions to humans with COVID-19; a spike protein-based subunit vaccine can largely prevent SARS-CoV-2 replication and lung damage in minks.

Virus-Free and Live-Cell Visualizing SARS-CoV-2 Cell Entry for Studies of Neutralizing Antibodies and Compound Inhibitors

Yali Zhang et al.

Summary: The study describes the development of a genetically engineered sensor, STG, that can effectively visualize the cellular entry process of SARS-CoV-2. The system allows for quantitative analysis of inhibition potentials and can be used for screening and characterizing SARS-CoV-2 entry inhibitors. This approach has the potential for adaptation to develop similar systems for visualizing viral entry of other viruses.

Gender associates with both susceptibility to infection and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 in Syrian hamster

Lunzhi Yuan et al.

Summary: Experimental studies on Syrian hamsters infected with SARS-CoV-2 showed that male hamsters had higher viral titers, more severe symptoms, and lung pathogenicity compared to female hamsters, providing evidence that the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 outcomes are associated with gender.
