Metabolomic profiling reveals the intestinal toxicity of different length of microplastic fibers on zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Yanping Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic fibers can cause intestinal damage and toxicity in zebrafish, with longer fibers producing more serious effects. Metabolomics analysis revealed that microplastic fibers can up-regulate glycerophospholipids metabolism, exacerbating oxidative damage and inflammation, while down-regulating fatty acyls metabolism related to nutritional deficiency.

Aquatic toxicity of chemically defined microplastics can be explained by functional additives

Ricardo Beiras et al.

Summary: A novel systematic approach was used to study the relationship between plastic toxicity and chemical composition, finding that aquatic toxicity of microplastics made from conventional oil-based polymers is mainly due to leaching of chemical additives rather than ingestion. The use of alternative additives did not consistently reduce aquatic toxicity, except for the replacement of triclosan with the alternative biocide lawsone. The biopolymer PHB may impact marine plankton through mechanisms associated with the higher abundance of nanometric plastic particles found in this resin.

Toxic effects of exposure to microplastics with environmentally relevant shapes and concentrations: Accumulation, energy metabolism and tissue damage in oyster Crassostrea gigas

Jia Teng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ingestion and effects of PE and PET microplastics on Crassostrea gigas oysters. Results showed negative impacts of MPs on oyster metabolism and tissue damage, with PET MPs showing greater toxicity than PE MPs. Metabolomics analysis revealed alterations in metabolic profiles in oysters due to MPs exposure.
