Combination of different chromatographic and sampling modes for high-resolution mass spectrometric screening of organic microcontaminants in water

Veronica Castro et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combination of two sampling strategies and four chromatographic retention modes for high-resolution mass spectrometry screening of organic pollutants in water samples. POCIS was found to offer more positive identifications compared to spot sampling, while SFC was identified as the best suited retention mechanism. The combination of sampling strategies and retention mechanisms was proposed to maximize the number of analytes detected.

Potential role of veterinary flea products in widespread pesticide contamination of English rivers

Rosemary Perkins et al.

Summary: Research indicates the presence of pesticide residues from companion animal parasiticides in some English rivers, posing potential environmental risks to aquatic ecosystems; elevated levels of fipronil and imidacloprid at specific sites are likely due to household drainage entering the waterways.

Occurrence and removal of emerging pollutants in urban sewage treatment plants using LC-QToF-MS suspect screening and quantification

Laure Wiest et al.

Summary: Urban wastewaters are found to be major vectors of emerging pollutants to aquatic ecosystems, with pharmaceutical residues and pesticides being the main contaminants. The study identified 41 emerging pollutants, with low removal rates observed for more than 50% of the compounds, posing potential ecotoxicological risks to exposed ecosystems.

Rapid direct analysis of river water and machine learning assisted suspect screening of emerging contaminants in passive sampler extracts

Alexandra K. Richardson et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel and rapid approach using multi-residue targeted analysis and machine learning-assisted in silico suspect screening to characterise the occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in river water. By deploying passive samplers configured with HLB sorbents in the tidal River Thames catchment, differences in the presence of various compounds between summer and winter campaigns were observed. The innovation in this approach lies in the convenience of combining passive sampling with machine learning-assisted chemical analysis for rapid and time-integrated monitoring of CECs in the catchment.
