Trophic transfer of carbon nanofibers among eisenia fetida, danio rerio and oreochromis niloticus and their toxicity at upper trophic level

Summary: This study investigated the accumulation of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in animals and their impact on the upper trophic level through an experimental food chain. The results showed that CNFs accumulated at all trophic levels and caused mutagenic and cytotoxic effects on Nile tilapia exposed to CNFs via the food chain. This study provided pioneering evidence on the effects of CNFs on O. niloticus.

Summary: Despite the ban on PCB production, PCBs are still found in the environment and wildlife tissues. Common snapping turtles have been used as indicators of PCB pollution, but the effects of PCBs on reptiles are largely unknown. This study suggests that juvenile snapping turtles may be able to metabolize low concentrations of PCBs, but further research is needed to assess the effects of PCB burdens on wild snapping turtles.

Summary: The study found that polystyrene nanoplastics can cause DNA damage, mutagenic and cytotoxic effects in juvenile grass carp. Animals exposed to higher concentrations of the pollutant showed significant biochemical changes and substantial accumulation of these nanomaterials.
