Contrasting changes in cloud optical properties and the influence of aerosols, meteorology and radiation feedback in the Himalaya Karakoram region

Muhammad Iftikhar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatio-temporal variations in cloud optical properties and the impact of aerosols, radiation feedback, and meteorological parameters in the Himalaya Karakoram region of northern Pakistan from 2004 to 2016. Results showed high AOD in spring, while winter months had high CF, CWP, and COD values. The Twomey effect caused clouds to become thicker and brighter, with a maximum COD and release of latent heat, affecting the vertical temperature gradient. Cloud top temperature increased from February to September, and CTP showed a minimum in February and maximum in November.

Evaluation of the near-surface climate of the recent global atmospheric reanalysis for Qilian Mountains, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Baojuan Huai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of four global reanalysis products in simulating temperature, air pressure, wind speed, and precipitation data in the Qilian Mountains region. The results show that ERA5 outperforms in correlation coefficients, especially for wind speed, but there is no significant improvement in other variables compared to ERAI. Overestimation of wind speed in HAR was identified as a problem due to the lack of a sub-grid orographic drag scheme. Despite some discrepancies, all four products show a warming trend, with the decade from 1990 to 1999 experiencing the fastest rate of warming.

Identifying a transport mechanism of dust aerosols over South Asia to the Tibetan Plateau: A case study

Tianhe Wang et al.

Summary: By studying a typical dust storm event erupted from the Thar Desert in South Asia in 2018, it was found that the dust aerosols were easily transported to the Tibet Plateau due to the joint action of an upper-level jet stream, an upper trough, and the subtropical high, which enhanced the climate impact on the Tibet Plateau and its downstream areas.

An assessment of long-term changes in mortalities due to extreme weather events in India: A study of 50 years' data, 1970-2019

Kamaljit Ray et al.

Summary: The study in the Indian subcontinent shows that annual average extreme weather events (EWEs) have been increasing in the last few decades, with floods and tropical cyclones causing the highest mortality rates. Despite the rise in EWEs, the mortality rate has decreased, except for tropical cyclones. The mortality rate has significant negative trends for heatwaves and floods over the past 50 years.
