Rapid urbanization and its driving mechanism in the Pan-Third Pole region

Wenfei Luan et al.

Summary: The study shows that the urbanized area of Pan-Third Pole cities has increased from 2809 km(2) in 2000 to 4380 km(2) in 2017, with an annual growth rate of nearly 3%, possibly the largest increase in the world. Population growth drives urban expansion, elevation is a limiting factor, and proximity to roads facilitates urbanization.

Summary: \ The Aral Sea crisis, considered one of the most severe ecological tragedies in Central Asia since the 1960s, is driven by water competition among different regions within the basin for agricultural irrigation. The persistent shrinkage of the Aral Sea water surface area highlights the importance of strengthening coordination and cooperation in cross-boundary water resource management as the key strategy to address the crisis.
