Lightening the Perceived Prosthesis Weight with Neural Embodiment Promoted by Sensory Feedback

Greta Preatoni et al.

Summary: The study found that providing intraneural sensory feedback can significantly reduce amputees' perception of prosthetic weight, while increasing embodiment and confidence in walking with the prosthesis. Sensory feedback also helps alleviate the reduction in walking speed and accuracy caused by increased cognitive load.

Sensory feedback for limb prostheses in amputees

Stanisa Raspopovic et al.

Summary: Commercial prosthetic devices currently lack natural sensory feedback, leading to unphysiological movement and health issues for users. Restoring natural sensory feedback to amputees is a clinical need that has not been met. Various neurotechnological approaches have been proposed for developing optimal sensory feedback restoration devices for arm and leg amputees.

Mechanisms of neuro-robotic prosthesis operation in leg amputees

Giacomo Valle et al.

Summary: Above-knee amputees often lack sensory information even with advanced prostheses. Restoring intraneural sensory feedback through neuro-robotic legs can lead to improved sensorimotor strategies and higher walking speeds. By objectively quantifying the confidence of the augmented prosthesis, researchers observed a reshaping of the legs' kinematics towards a more natural gait, indicating potential effectiveness for future neuro-robotic prostheses.
