Determination of the δ2H values of high molecular weight lipids by high-temperature gas chromatography coupled to isotope ratio mass spectrometry

Sabine K. Lengger et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to determine the hydrogen isotopic composition of lipids using high-temperature gas chromatography on a modified GC/P/IRMS system. The results show that the method is suitable for determining the δH-2 values of various high molecular weight compounds such as TGs and GDGTs, expanding the possibilities for biomarker and food stable isotope analyses. Initial measurements suggest that bacterial and archaeal GDGT δH-2 values may reflect environmental and ecological conditions.

Nutritional consequences of breeding away from riparian habitats in Bank Swallows: new evidence from multiple endogenous markers

Corrine S. Genier et al.

Summary: The Bank Swallow is a threatened species in Canada that primarily breeds in lakeshores and artificial mining pits. Research found that birds in lakeshore areas consumed more aquatic emergent insects, while inland birds consumed more terrestrial prey. Juveniles from lakeshores had higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood plasma.

Detection of exogenous sugars in pineapple juice using compound-specific stable hydrogen isotope analysis

Simon D. Kelly et al.

Summary: An improved procedure utilizing gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry has successfully detected the addition of exogenous C4 plant-derived sugars to pineapple juice. Site-specific C-13 analysis of ethanol derived from pineapple sugars has proven to be a reliable method in differentiating between authentic pineapple juices and those adulterated with commercial beet and cane sucrose.
