Brightness perception changes related to pupil size

Unni Sulutvedt et al.

Summary: This study found that dilating the pupils with Tropicamide can significantly enhance the perception of brightness of an object. The researchers observed that the subjective brightness of the pattern increased following viewing with the treated eye, indicating a consistent relationship between pupil dilation and perceived brightness. Additionally, an average increase of 2.09 cd/m(2) in brightness was reported for each 1 mm increase in pupil diameter.
