Increase in suicide following an initial decline during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan

Summary: This study found that during the initial months of the pandemic, Japan experienced a decrease in suicide rates possibly due to factors like government subsidies, reduced working hours, and school closure. However, during the second wave, there was an increase in suicide rates, particularly among females and children/adolescents.

Substance use and abuse, COVID-19-related distress, and disregard for social distancing: A network analysis

Summary: Research shows a significant increase in substance use and abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two syndromes, COVID Stress Syndrome and COVID-19 Disregard Syndrome, are positively linked to alcohol and drug abuse. Anxiety about COVID-19 and a disregard for social distancing are related to substance abuse.

Summary: Our study provides evidence of significant neurological and psychiatric morbidity in the 6 months following COVID-19 infection. The risks were highest in patients with severe COVID-19. This information could assist in service planning and research priority identification.
