Cellulose-hemicellulose interactions-A nanoscale view

Ali Khodayari et al.

Summary: In this work, the interactions of five different hemicellulose models with cellulose nanocrystals were studied through molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that glucuronoarabinoxylan had the highest binding free energy, while xyloglucan showed the lowest interaction energies. The presence of water molecules was observed to weaken the interactions between hemicellulose and cellulose.

Recrystallization and size distribution of dislocated segments in cellulose microfibrils-a molecular dynamics perspective

Ali Khodayari et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the pseudo-recrystallization of dislocated cellulose regions in CMFs, suggesting that 3-4 glucose residues bordering each side of a cellulose nanocrystal are reorganizing. The estimated length of the dislocated cellulose segments in CMFs for cotton and ramie sources ranges from 3.1-5.8 nm, equivalent to 6-11 glucose residues in the cellulose crystallites.

Extensive investigation of the ultrastructure of kink-bands in flax fibres

Alessia Melelli et al.

Summary: Kink-bands in plant fibers are caused by abiotic stress during the retting stage and the fiber extraction process. Studies show that there are ultrastructure heterogeneities and local defects in kink-band areas, but further research is needed to fully understand their origins and impacts.

Novel Insight into the Intricate Shape of Flax Fibre Lumen

Emmanuelle Richely et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shape and variations of flax fiber lumen using a combination of characterization techniques, highlighting the difficulty of defining a single geometric reference for the lumen. The intricate lumen shape may originate from factors such as cell wall thickening, cell death, and post mortem processing. Observations following tensile testing reveal the combined effect of geometrical inhomogeneities and intricate lumen porosity in driving fiber failure.
