Omega-6 fatty acids and the risk of cardiovascular disease: insights from a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and a Mendelian randomization study

Mohsen Mazidi et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiometabolic risk factors. The findings suggest that omega-6 PUFA supplementation does not affect the risk of CVD morbidity and mortality. However, higher serum levels of omega-6 acid (AA) were associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease events, myocardial infarction, and large artery stroke.

The impact of type of dietary protein, animal versus vegetable, in modifying cardiometabolic risk factors: A position paper from the International Lipid Expert Panel (ILEP)

Fjolla Zhubi-Bakija et al.

Summary: Proteins are crucial for metabolism, maintaining fluid and acid-base balance, and antibody synthesis. A balanced diet with both animal and plant proteins can help reduce cardiovascular disease risk. Optimum nutrition emphasizing plant-based proteins and certain animal-based proteins can positively affect cardiometabolic risk factors, while red meat intake is associated with increased risk mainly due to saturated fats.

Anti-inflammatory Action of Statins in Cardiovascular Disease: the Role of Inflammasome and Toll-Like Receptor Pathways

Khadijeh Koushki et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease where statin medications are one of the most effective treatments. Recent studies show that statins not only lower lipid levels, but also have inhibitory and stimulatory effects on inflammasomes and toll-like receptors. The contradictory effects of different statins are related to factors such as dosage, chemistry, pharmacokinetics, and danger signals.

Effect of Omega-3 Dosage on Cardiovascular Outcomes: An Updated Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression of Interventional Trials

Aldo A. Bernasconi et al.

Summary: The study aims to quantify the effects of EPA and DHA on cardiovascular disease prevention and the effect of dosage. Supplementation with EPA and DHA was associated with reduced risks of myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease events, fatal MI, and CHD mortality, with the protective effect potentially increasing with dosage.

Natural compounds as anti-atherogenic agents: Clinical evidence for improved cardiovascular outcomes

Peter E. Penson et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease with substantial morbidity and mortality, but can be managed with evidence-based pharmaceutical agents and natural products. The nutraceutical approach, identifying active ingredients in natural products and evaluating them in outcomes trials, can bridge the gap between natural product research and evidence-based medicine.

An Update on Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Health

Andrew Elagizi et al.

Summary: Interest in the potential cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3) began in the 1940s, but there has been controversy due to conflicting results among studies and meta-analyses. Recent large, randomized trials showed discordant findings, with one using a higher dose of omega-3 showing a significant reduction in cardiovascular events. The conflicting results in clinical trials may be due to inadequate dosing of omega-3 and aggressive treatment with other effective therapies.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid and Brain Metabolism: A Possible Anti-Neuroinflammatory Role Mediated by PPARα Activation

Elisabetta Murru et al.

Summary: CLA, as a group of isomers of linoleic acid, plays a crucial role in brain health by binding to PPARα, regulating fatty acid metabolism and exerting anti-neuroinflammatory effects. Further studies are needed to explore the potential anti-inflammatory activity of dietary CLA, especially in neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders with a neuroinflammatory basis.

Summary: Recent studies have shown an important role for colchicine in reducing atherosclerotic cardiovascular events, although no reduction in all-cause mortality has been demonstrated. The sample sizes of studies may affect the reliability of the results, and mild gastrointestinal symptoms are the most common adverse effects reported.
