Spatiotemporal control of liquid crystal structure and dynamics through activity patterning

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of spatially structured activity to control and manipulate transport in active nematic liquid crystals, where topological defects can be generated and constrained to move along specified trajectories by inducing local stresses. Light-responsive myosin motors enable spatial and temporal control over the dynamics and transport of active nematic liquid crystals at an oil-water interface.

Defect Spirograph: Dynamical Behavior of Defects in Spatially Patterned Active Nematics

Ali Mozaffari et al.

Summary: The study shows that topological defects in active liquid crystals can be confined by introducing gradients of activity, leading to different dynamic modes describing the behavior of defects. These findings could potentially be applied in microfluidic applications.

Alignment of a topological defect by an activity gradient

Xingzhou Tang et al.

Summary: The modeling of a topological defect with a charge of +1/2 moving in an activity gradient using three methods demonstrates that the defect orientation aligns in the presence of the gradient, offering a potential method for controlling defect motion.

Machine learning forecasting of active nematics

Zhengyang Zhou et al.

Summary: Active nematics are materials characterized by local orientational order and anisotropic constitutes of force generation, usually studied using traditional hydrodynamic models. Researchers have developed a deep learning approach using ConvLSTM algorithm to predict the dynamics of active nematics, regardless of traditional models.
