Molecular basis for high ligand sensitivity and selectivity of strigolactone receptors in Striga

Summary: The study reveals that seeds of the root parasitic plant Striga hermonthica can sense very low concentrations of strigolactones exuded from host roots, with the sensitivity attributed to the ShHTL7 protein. The crystal structure of ShHTL7 and its interactions with various SLs and key proteins have been determined, shedding light on the molecular mechanism underlying its sensitivity. The findings also highlight the potential role of the SL-induced MAX2-ShHTL7-SMAX1 complex formation in determining the sensitivity to strigolactones.
