Supergranule aggregation for constant heat flux-driven turbulent convection

Philipp P. Vieweg et al.

Summary: This study reveals the gradual aggregation of convection cells to form supergranules in three-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection, which only occurs when turbulence is driven by constant heat flux. The research also observes the gradual inverse cascade process for temperature variance and turbulent kinetic energy, as well as the instability mechanism persisting in the fully developed turbulent flow regime. These findings have implications for improving simulation models of surface convection in the Sun.

Hydrodynamic Properties of the Sun's Giant Cellular Flows

David H. Hathaway et al.

Summary: Measurements of large cellular flows on the Sun reveal key distinctions between low-latitude and high-latitude cells, with the former having circular shapes, shorter lifetimes, and rigid rotation, while the latter exhibit elongated shapes, longer lifetimes, and differential rotation. These flows are dominated by the curl component with rms velocities of about 12 m s(-1), with low-latitude and high-latitude components represented by different spectral features.
