Connecting the data landscape of long-term ecological studies: The SPI-Birds data hub

Antica Culina et al.

Summary: The lack of standards and networking programmes significantly hinders the integration and synthesis of data in various scientific fields. Long-term studies of individually marked animals play a crucial role in understanding evolutionary and ecological processes in the wild. The SPI-Birds Network and Database have been established to address data integration issues and enable a new scale of ecological and evolutionary research based on long-term studies of birds.

Repeatable differences in exploratory behaviour predict tick infestation probability in wild great tits

Robert E. Rollins et al.

Summary: Our study found that the infestation probability and burden of ticks in great tits are influenced by individual-specific traits and ecological factors. While exploratory behavior and body condition were not directly related to tick burden, faster explorers had a higher infestation probability. Additionally, human disturbance was correlated with increased infestation probability, emphasizing the importance of animal behavior and environmental factors in parasite infestation among avian hosts.

Sexual selection and personality: Individual and group-level effects on mating behaviour in red junglefowl

Allison M. Roth et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of individual personalities in sexual selection, specifically exploring and boldness, in male red junglefowl. The results showed that faster exploring males had better mating success, while boldness did not predict mating performance. In female-biased groups, both the fastest and slowest exploring males had higher mating success, indicating that sexual selection on personality is complex and contingent on the social environment.

Integrating Behavior in Life-History Theory: Allocation versus Acquisition?

Kate L. Laskowski et al.

Summary: The central theories explaining individual behavioral differences based on life-history trade-offs lack robust empirical support. The ambiguity in the role of behavior in resource allocation and acquisition hinders empirical testing. Understanding the balance between resource allocation and acquisition, and the role of behavior in this process, is crucial for more accurate predictions.

Heterogeneous selection on exploration behavior within and among West European populations of a bird

Alexia Mouchet et al.

Summary: The study shows that selection on exploration behavior primarily varies spatially across populations, while also varying within populations among years. Spatial variation in selection may represent a primary mechanism maintaining animal personalities and promoting local adaptation, phenotype-dependent dispersal, and nonrandom settlement. Combining multiple spatiotemporal scales is important for studying behavioral adaptation.
