Quasi-static indentation and impact in glass-fibre reinforced polymer sandwich panels for civil and ocean engineering applications

M. Garrido et al.

Summary: Sandwich structures with glass-fibre reinforced polymer faces and low-density core are commonly used in civil and ocean engineering, but are prone to damage under concentrated loads due to their multilayer composition. This study experimentally investigated the quasi-static indentation and low-velocity impact behaviour of thicker civil and ocean engineering sandwich laminates, considering different types of core materials and indenters. Results showed that polyethylene terephthalate panels exhibited higher damage resistance and peak resistance values compared to polyurethane panels, while polyurethane panels showed the highest energy absorption capacity. Predictions from analytical models were reasonably accurate, but further calibration is needed, particularly regarding the effects of core material.

Experimental study on the high-velocity impact behavior of sandwich structures with an emphasis on the layering effects of foam core

Mohammad Abbasi et al.

Summary: This study found that increasing the core layering of sandwich structures can enhance their ballistic resistance. Panels with a four-layer core of different arrangements have a 5% to 8% higher ballistic limit velocity compared to panels with a single-layer core. Increasing the core density of single-layer core structures also leads to a higher ballistic limit velocity.

Effect of blowing agent concentration on rigid polyurethane foam and the properties of foam-core particleboard

Ali Shalbafan et al.

Summary: The research found that increasing blowing agent concentration can improve the bending strength and internal bond value of the foam board, but will not significantly change the screw withdrawal resistance and thickness swelling; however, the edge screw withdrawal resistance and water absorption will significantly decrease as the blowing agent concentration increases throughout the studied range.
