Severe postpartum hemorrhage increases risk of posttraumatic stress disorder: a prospective cohort study

Minouk E. van Steijn et al.

Summary: The study found that severe postpartum hemorrhage patients are more prone to developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with a higher clinical diagnosis rate. Obstetricians and midwives are recommended to screen for PTSD during postpartum follow-up visits to prevent long-term negative mental health effects.

Underutilisation of psychiatric care among refugee adolescents in Stockholm

Lisa Berg et al.

Summary: Refugee children in Sweden, especially those from low- and middle-income countries, underutilize psychiatric services. Among foreign-born refugee adolescents in Sweden, the longer they have resided in the country, the higher their utilization of psychiatric care. Children who obtained residency as asylum seekers utilized psychiatric care more than those who settled in family reunification.

Accuracy of postpartum hemorrhage coding in the Swedish Pregnancy Register

Linnea V. Ladfors et al.

Summary: The study conducted a retrospective cohort study of over 600,000 deliveries in Sweden between 2014 and 2019 and found that ICD-10 codes for PPH in Sweden have moderately high sensitivity and excellent specificity. The results suggest that these diagnostic codes can be used for research, quality improvement, and reporting PPH prevalence in Sweden.

Initiation of antidepressant use among refugee and Swedish-born youth after diagnosis of a common mental disorder: findings from the REMAIN study

Heidi Taipale et al.

Summary: Young refugees with a common mental disorder are less likely to initiate antidepressant use compared to their Swedish-born counterparts, and when they do, they are less likely to use selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Factors associated with increased odds of antidepressant initiation among refugees include previous use of anxiolytics or hypnotics, previous sickness absence of < 90 days, cancer and older age, while shorter duration of residency in Sweden is associated with decreased odds.

Who do we miss when screening for postpartum depression? A population-based study in a Swedish region

Emma Brann et al.

Summary: The study found that 30.0% of women in the Östergötland county of Sweden were not offered postpartum depression screening during postpartum follow-up. Women born outside of Sweden and those reporting poor self-rated health were at increased risk of not being offered screening. Strategies to improve universal screening and increase awareness among healthcare providers of the risk factors for not screening are important for early detection and support for postpartum depression.
