The MYB transcription factor LrAN2 from Lycium ruthenicum regulates the biosynthesis of anthocyanins and glycoalkaloids in potato, offering a new breeding strategy for potato improvements.
The MYB transcription factors play versatile roles in regulating secondary metabolites in plants, especially, in phenylpropane metabolism and anthocyanin biosynthesis. However, research on MYB transcription factors regulation of other metabolic pathways is rare. Here, we report the effects of constitutive expression of the MYB transcription factor LrAN2 from Lycium ruthenicum in potato. Overexpression of LrAN2 in potato led to an increase in the accumulation of anthocyanins and simultaneously altered the profile of the total glycoalkaloids (SGAs). Overexpression of LrAN2 upregulated the expression of related genes in the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway and altered the expression of related genes in the SGA biosynthetic pathway in potato. Our findings demonstrated that LrAN2 might engage in crosstalk between the accumulation of anthocyanins and SGAs in potato leaves, offering a new breeding strategy for potato improvements.
