Gypsum-exclusive plants accumulate more leaf S than non-exclusive species both in and off gypsum

Andreu Cera et al.

Summary: Gypsum-exclusive species, known as gypsophiles, grow in gypseous soils with unique leaf elemental signatures due to their specific nutritional requirements. However, research shows that these plants are able to complete their life cycle in non-gypseous soils as well, producing more seeds, greater biomass, and higher photosynthetic assimilation rates. Despite this, gypsophiles still maintain a distinct leaf chemical signature compared to gypsovags, especially with a high leaf sulfur content under all soil conditions.

Vertical decoupling of soil nutrients and water under climate warming reduces plant cumulative nutrient uptake, water-use efficiency and productivity

Jose Ignacio Querejeta et al.

Summary: Global warming-induced topsoil desiccation alters plant water and nutrient utilization patterns. Plants shift towards utilizing water stored in deeper layers under warming, but this response cannot compensate for the reduction in nutrient uptake and carbon assimilation.

Plant's gypsum affinity shapes responses to specific edaphic constraints without limiting responses to other general constraints

Ricardo Sanchez-Martin et al.

Summary: Different plant species in gypsum outcrops exhibit varying degrees of affinity to soil properties, influencing their responses to specific soil limitations. Plant's specializations to respond to specific edaphic constraints of gypsum soils do not limit their ability to deal with other non-specific environmental constraints.
