Impact of compound drops: a perspective

Nathan Blanken et al.

Summary: Researchers are increasingly focusing on the interaction of droplets with solid surfaces, paying more attention to 'complex' surfaces and droplets. A recent trend in research is the investigation of compound drop impact, which consists of two or more distinct continuous phases sharing common interfaces, surrounded by a third phase. This review addresses the fundamental aspects of compound drop impact and discusses challenges in experimental testing and numerical simulation of multiphase fluid systems.

Secondary atomization of water-in-oil emulsion drops impinging on a heated surface in the film boiling regime

Summary: The study investigates secondary atomization resulting from the impact of a water-in-oil emulsion drop on a hot sapphire glass surface. It demonstrates that higher emulsion concentrations significantly reduce the size of secondary droplets.

Maximum spreading and energy analysis of ellipsoidal impact droplets

Xuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact behaviors of ellipsoidal water droplets on solid surfaces, finding that both the maximum spreading time and factor increase with the increasing aspect ratio. The theoretical analysis suggests that reducing the aspect ratio enhances the viscous dissipation during impact. The modified theoretical model reduces deviations from -23% to -51% to -5% to -25% and elucidates the scaling law between the maximum spreading factor and aspect ratio.

Maximum spreading of an impacting air-in-liquid compound drop

Yu Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that adding a bubble to an air-in-liquid compound drop can decrease its maximum spreading, mainly due to the decrease in drop kinetic energy and the formation of a vertical jet. A new theory incorporating modified Weber and Reynolds numbers is proposed to describe the maximum spreading of these compound drops. The eventual bursting of the bubble does not significantly affect the maximum spreading diameter.
