Optical characterization of droplet clusters and group combustion in spray diffusion flames

M. Manish et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation was conducted on the clustering of fuel droplets and group combustion of droplet clusters in a spray burner. The results showed significant reduction of gasification rate of droplets within the clusters, multi-scale droplet clustering, and multi-mode combustion during the spray burning process. The application of Voronoi analysis facilitated the characterization of clusters of droplets.

Effect of Cross-Flow Swirl on the Trajectory of Spray in an Annular Passage

Summary: The experimental analysis examined the impact of swirl number on liquid jet spray trajectory in cross-flowing air, revealing that high swirling flows result in spray with lower radial penetration and larger spread and coverage area.

Numerical simulation of the atomization of liquid transverse jet in supersonic airflow

Junkai Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical method for liquid jet atomization in supersonic gas crossflow, considering compressibility of the gas and incompressibility of the liquid. The simulation involves high-order accurate schemes for gas flows and the Chorin projection method for liquid flow. It also analyzes the breakup process and the effect of Mach number on liquid jet atomization.

Effect of airflow pressure on the droplet breakup in the shear breakup regime

Wanli Zhu et al.

Summary: This study conducted three-dimensional simulations of shear breakup of water droplets using coupled level set volume of fluid and large eddy simulation methods. The effect of airflow pressure on deformation and breakup characteristics was investigated, along with discussions on sub-droplet size distributions. Results showed good agreement with experimental visualizations in the shear breakup regime, with discussions on wake recirculation variations due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability waves. Higher airflow pressures increased deformations and resulted in earlier breakup initiations, with reductions in mean sub-droplet sizes observed as pressure increased. Linear growths of aggregate superficial area ratios and mass ratios of sub-droplets to parent droplet were also observed.

Droplet breakup and coalescence of an internal-mixing twin-fluid spray

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: The air-assisted spray consists of a bulk of tiny droplets entrained by high-speed gas-phase flow, with droplets less than 5 micrometers in diameter accounting for the majority. In the far-field of the spray, coalescence dominates droplet collision dynamics.
