Bacteria hinder large-scale transport and enhance small-scale mixing in time-periodic flows

Ranjiangshang Ran et al.

Summary: Bacterial activity affects fluid stretching and chaoticity, influencing the transport process; Bacterial activity hinders the transport of scalar variance across scales, increasing the size and lifetime of structures; At small scales, bacterial activity seems to enhance local mixing.

Stability of generalized Kolmogorov flow in a channel

Francesco Romano

Summary: This study generalized the Kolmogorov flow using a generic forcing term and performed linear stability analysis on power-law profiles with different exponents. Critical conditions for wall-bounded flows were compared in terms of critical Reynolds number, critical wavelength, and eigenspectrum at criticality. The most dangerous perturbations were characterized, revealing three qualitatively different most dangerous modes depending on various factors.

A Hopf Bifurcation in the Planar Navier-Stokes Equations

Gianni Arioli et al.

Summary: This study examines the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible viscous fluid on a square with Navier boundary conditions and a time-independent force, showing that as the kinematic viscosity changes, a branch of stationary solutions undergoes a Hopf bifurcation producing a periodic cycle. The proof provided is constructive and relies on computer-assisted estimates.

Steady-State Bifurcation of a Non-parallel Flow Involving Energy Dissipation over a Hartmann Boundary Layer

Zhi-Min Chen

Summary: A study of plane non-parallel vortex flow in a square fluid domain was conducted, showing that energy dissipation is mainly influenced by viscosity and the linear friction effect of a Hartmann layer. The research demonstrated that linear critical values of a spectral problem serve as nonlinear thresholds leading to secondary steady-state flows.

Robust learning from noisy, incomplete, high-dimensional experimental data via physically constrained symbolic regression

Patrick A. K. Reinbold et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that combining data-driven methods with physical principles can lead to the discovery of accurate models of non-equilibrium spatially extended systems from high-dimensional, noisy, and incomplete experimental data. This hybrid approach also allows for the reconstruction of inaccessible variables successfully.
