The socioeconomic and environmental drivers of the COVID-19 pandemic: A review

Tong Wu

Summary: In recent decades, intensification of the socioeconomic and environmental drivers has contributed to the risk of pandemics such as COVID-19, including ecosystem conversion, meat consumption, urbanization, and connectivity among cities and countries. To mitigate these risks, policy measures such as habitat protection and restrictions on the wildlife trade are necessary.

Global functional and phylogenetic structure of avian assemblages across elevation and latitude

Marta A. Jarzyna et al.

Summary: This study documents variations in avian functional and phylogenetic diversity along major elevational gradients worldwide, revealing strong latitudinal differences. Assemblages in warm tropical lowlands and cold temperate highlands exhibit high functional overdispersion and distinctiveness, while tropical highlands and temperate lowlands show strong functional clustering and redundancy.

Integrating climate and host richness as drivers of global parasite diversity

Paulo Mateus Martins et al.

Summary: Climate and host richness are essential drivers of global gradients in parasite diversity, with host richness having a stronger effect. Temperature seasonality and total precipitation indirectly affect parasite diversity through their respective impacts on host richness. Future studies should consider both direct and indirect effects of climatic factors on parasite diversity to understand the interactions among different diversity drivers at a macroecological scale.
