Inflammatory cytokines derived from peripheral blood contribute to the modified electroconvulsive therapy-induced cognitive deficits in major depressive disorder

Haihua Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the profiles of inflammatory cytokines and their association with memory function in MECT-treated MDD patients. The results indicated that levels of NLRP3 inflammasome, IL-18, and NF-kappa B significantly increased in MDD patients before and after MECT, and were negatively correlated with total WMS scores. These findings suggest that the disturbed balance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms may contribute to cognitive deficits induced by MECT in MDD patients.

Inhibition of phosphodiesterase-4 suppresses HMGB1/RAGE signaling pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in mice exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress

Jinfeng Xie et al.

Summary: Inhibition of phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) can reduce depressive symptoms and inflammation in mice, showing potential as antidepressant drugs. The down-regulation of HMGB1/RAGE signaling pathway and suppression of inflammasome may contribute to the antidepressant-like effects of PDE4 inhibitors.

Activation and deactivation steps in the tryptophan breakdown pathway in major depressive disorder: A link to the monocyte inflammatory state of patients

Gara Arteaga-Henriquez et al.

Summary: The tryptophan breakdown pathway is related to the inflammatory state in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Two patient cohorts showed clinical differences, with varying levels of inflammation and tryptophan metabolism. Ultimately, the impact on glutamate receptors in the brain remains to be fully understood.
